In a field like venture capital, where we live and breathe risk, it’s comical how risk-averse we are when it comes to our personal brands. Don’t say the wrong thing. Don’t upset a potential portfolio company and risk being excluded from the next round. Don’t get canceled at an event because you gave actual feedback, and the entrepreneur didn’t like your answer. Always pretend you are all-knowing. Never let your guard down.
Maybe I shouldn’t be writing this after a marathon of due diligence for our upcoming cohort at Pegasus Angel Accelerator, but c’est la vie.
Can we please inject some fun into this space? When did we forget to laugh?
This space is complex and overly romanticized. I equate founding a company to crawling over broken glass to a bed of nails. We, as investors, need to stop giving nonsense advice and give unfiltered feedback to help you reach your goals.
